We know you are all anxious because we have not posted lately. Kristy is attending to some personal business and is out of town and activity at the hospital is always constant and allows very little time for journal entries. Kristy will post very shortly.
Just a quick update – Scott is continuing to be very active in his therapy sesssions. On September 8th he was transferred to University Hospital and on the 9th he had a DPS(Diaphram Pacing System) installed. He returned to Metro on September 10th. The objective of the DPS is to assist Scott with his breathing thus enabling him to come off the ventilator. The good news is that Scott does have Diaphram ability, (although weak) and this is an extremely positive thing for Scott. He is somewhat frightened by the pacing and will need to practice several times a day to become more comfortable with the device; however, the better he does the quicker he can eliminate the ventilator.
He still has not been able to shed his “hard collar” which is very uncomfortable for him. We are hoping that a decision regarding removal will occur soon – we are approaching 11 weeks post injury.
Scott has a discharge date set for October 27, 2009, which is fast approaching. Unfortunately, because of Medicare/Medicaid rules in Ohio, he will probably have to go to a nursing home before returning home. He is definitely not pleased about that.
The realities of taking care of Scott, medically, physically and financially are beginning to “sink in”. We will all need to be trained to take care of Scott; however, Kristy and Lindsey will be considered the primary care givers. Unfortunately, neither of them has much time for anything else personal, like eating, cleaning, shopping or relaxing – Kristy is with Scott almost all day and Lindsey is at work all day and can only get to the hospital at night. No one is complaining however because SCOTT IS WORTH IT ALL!!!
A couple of items to note: Lindsey is in the process of organizing another smaller fundraiser in the Cleveland area with some of Scott’s friends sometime before the end of the year. We will keep you posted.
For those of you in the Toldeo area – Max & Erma’s – Maumee is generously donating 20% of sales on Thursday, September 17th to Scott’s trust. The offer is good all day long, but you MUST PRESENT THE COUPON to take advantage of the offer. Please go to
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=131047483250 or e-mail Chrissy Arvin for the PDF of the coupon at chrisarvin@yahoo.com
Please support this endeavor and invite your friends to do so also.
One final note to all you parents: make sure you hold your children (young and old) every chance you get; you never want to be in a position where you hear…”I just want to be able to feel you hold me again and be able to hold my family”
God Bless You All and keep praying for Scott’s miracle
