Hell Week /hel wi:k/
Noun
1. a week in which everything must go to plan, but nothing does

When it rains, it pours. I guess…

I had been struggling with some stomach spasms for a couple days and decided to get them checked out last Monday morning. A quick trip down the road to the emergency room turned into a hospital admission for kidney infection and sepsis.

I hadn’t really been feeling that horrible to begin with, just kind of “off” my usual game.

Of course the admittance couldn’t have come at a worse time. I was scheduled to pack up the apartment and have the movers pick up everything on Wednesday morning. Unfortunately, trying to push this back a few days would not be an option. My place had already been rented out and thus the complex would be unable to extend me a few extra days.

Over the past several years I have found myself much, much better at handling stressful situations. However, even a moderate dose of stress isn’t exactly a remedy for the type of contagions my body was trying to battle.

These are the moments when all you can do is place your faith in God. Fortunately, he delivered me a few angels in the forms of my mother, Lucy, and Tanya who were able to finish getting everything packed up in time for Wednesday morning.

While in the hospital, I was visited by 4 of the Cleveland Browns players. I didn’t recognize any of them, and have a feeling that some of them might not even be with the team this fall. However, I got a free blanket out of the deal.

By the time Wednesday evening rolled around, I still couldn’t get confirmation on a discharge date from any of the doctors. Not only was the new house an absolute disaster with stuff strewn everywhere, stress was beginning to take its toll on others as well.

After all, Lindsey was scheduled to be married in less than 48 hours.

I had joked tongue-in-cheek over the prior weekend that her pending nuptials were interfering with my impending move. However, now the situation was much more serious, as my pestilent kidneys were interfering with what should be the happiest day of her life. Not to mention, she had asked me to give the toast, so there was no way I could even think about letting her down.

Thursday afternoon I was finally discharged and allowed to head home. As I entered my new home as a resident for the first time, Lucy and Angela, one of my nurses, were busy trying to make sense of the chaos. I left them to it, as I headed straight to bed for the rest of the day.

I awoke Friday morning in my own place for the first time in almost 7 1/2 years. Unfortunately, I was still feeling pretty yucky and grimaced as I wondered how I was going to struggle through the entire day.

Again, through God’s grace, I was able to enjoy a wonderful evening with family and friends and witness my sister marry her best friend, AJ. Lindsey looked absolutely gorgeous! It was a beautiful ceremony. Great food, great venue, great times. I even managed to feel better as the night went on.

Although I need to have surgery over the next couple weeks, this week is already off to a much better start. I’m in a new home, the Cavs won another playoff game, and I’m looking forward to enjoying a great meal with family and friends Tuesday evening.

But I’m done with the rain. Bring on the sun.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone for keeping me in your prayers.

Stand Strong!

Scott

PS – with all of the excitement, I’ve yet to spend much time handicapping Saturday’s Kentucky Derby. However, an acquaintance of mine who follows the industry closely, swears that I should be “all in” on Mohaymen.

Wow, Scott, so sorry to hear about your illness and pending surgery. My thoughts and prayers are with you for a speedy recovery. Very glad to hear, though, that you were able to make your sister’s wedding, I’m sure that meant the world to her and to the rest of your family. And congratulations on making the move! Especially in spite of all the obstacles. Your fortitude is amazing!

Oh my goodness – that is a lot to be thrown at one time but on the flip side it is heat that you were smart enough to get it checked out in the first place. At least the spring weather is starting?? I love the blanket comment –about the only thing that team has ever given you! Huh! Hang in there…I am on leave right now following back surgery – my mood seems to improve when the sun in out?? Or it it the pain meds?? Either way take care!!

You’re right…when it rains, it pours. Your attitude is amazing. That sense of humor will enable you to get through all of the rain that falls, so to speak. I’m keeping you in my daily rosary intentions. Thank you for all of your posts; they really do inspire, and your sense of humor is awesome.

Wow! And I thought I had problems with an abscess tooth. I am so sorry that you are having Kidney problems. You don’t mess around with that. Saturday, I was thinking of you moving into your new home all happy and celebrating Lindsey’s wedding. You and your family won’t forget this week end! I wish you had called me to help with the move. Congratulations and blessings on the new home and on Lindsey’s and AJ’s marriage.
